Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams in The Notebook
I loved The Notebook. It's sort of two movie love stories in one; one younger, one older. In the younger story, all of the standard angles of young love and attraction are played out. Beyond that, there is a sense that some deeper connection exists between the two. Finally, the deeper aspects are demonstrated in the older story.
I kept thinking while watching this that neither James Garner nor Gena Rowlands have won Oscars. It's about time. Both are terrific. Their story isn't flashy and doesn't move from place to place. The action is all in their faces and their eyes. They've lived a lifetime of love and it shows.
It's hard to talk about this movie and not reveal some things that are better left unsaid. If you are a love story person, this one is for you. Bring tissue(s).
