Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story Posted by Hello

We picked Dodgeball to round out our double feature with The Notebook. It worked time-wise. The trailer had seemed funny.

One thing we noticed before the movie had even started is that we were with a different crowd than we are used to. There were lots of teenagers. Lots of really cool teenagers that kept standing up to adjust the sag on their pants. Cell phones were going off everywhere. One "boy" had flipped up the arm rest so that he could sit between two "girls".

As the lights dimmed, the guy next to me answered his cell phone. I couldn't possibly recreate the slang-laden conversation, but I gathered that a friend was asking of his whereabouts. It turns out that they were both in the same theater. So during the previews, I heard things like "Dude, I'm here. Dude, right here. Dude, can't you see me? Dude, turn around. Turn around. Dude, can't you see me? Yo."

When the movie started, I quickly developed a distaste for Ben Stiller's character...too over the top, too smarmy, too overacted. Once the camera was off of him, I started to enjoy things a bit. I enjoyed all of the other characters, particularly Rip Torn. He really makes the movie for me. His standout line for me is: "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."

It's amazing that even at about the 30th time that you've seen someone get whacked in the head with either a ball or a wrench that it is still hysterically funny.
