The Last Samurai

The Last Samurai Posted by Hello

I just made a comment about widescreen versus full screen on Under the Tuscan Sun. That film is 1.85:1 whereas The Last Samurai is 2.40:1! Why would anyone want to chop up such a widescreen image? I don't know.

Anyway, I have to admit that my reason for renting this was to see what all the fuss was about. It got a little buzz back during the Oscar season and I was curious. I did think that Ken Watanabe was excellent. But aside from that, I couldn't wait for this one to be over. I kept thinking that it has to get better sometime.

I guess that it did. I do appreciate the ending and the fact that the filmakers were trying to show the transition from a samurai warrior system to a war method using guns. Ok. I got that. But I have to say I didn't really care.

Did the Japanese emperor really feel empathy for the last samurai? Did he really disgrace his advisor? I could've listened to the commentary to find out, I guess.
But by the time this 2 and a half hour flick came to a close, I couldn't wait to pop it back into the return envelope.
